Hi,

The challenge that you are experiencing with Surface Pro 3's fan constantly running might be software-related. This means that a setting may not be set up appropriately, or that a specific driver is not installed correctly. To address this concern, we suggest that you run Windows Updates and make sure that you install the latest Firmware and drivers for Surface.

If the issue still persists, open the Task Manager and look for Windows Installer Module (WIM) and Windows Installer Module Worker (WIMW). In case they are still running, end their tasks and the system should normalize.

Let us know if the above steps helped resolve your concern.

Regards.

Hi Rocco,

There can be several reasons why the fan constantly runs. Overheating and software-related issues may cause this problem. Have you tried to perform a clean boot and check if the issue persists? Doing a clean boot helps to eliminate any software conflicts that might be causing the fan to run excessively. You can go to this link and follow the steps on how to perform a clean boot.

Furthermore, we recommend that you run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. The SDT resolves common problems with your Surface and the diagnosis may take 15 minutes or less, but can take an hour or longer and depending on your internet connection speed and the repairs that the tool needs to do to fix the problems.

To run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, click here.

We hope this helps, and let us know if you have any additional concerns.

Regards.

I have tried multiple things suggested here and the cooling fan is still running all the time. This kills my battery life and ruins the usability of the best tablet i've ever owned!

I have the same issue. All updates are complete, ran Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, cleared out Google Chrome, restarted device multiple times, and anything else I could think of or have seen suggestions for.

As soon as I turn on my Surface Pro 3 (from sleep or shut down) the fan starts immediately and doesn't stop.

PLEASE ADVISE!!!!

I too am experiencing issues with the fan constantly spinning thus making a fair bit of noise.  This is battering the battery performance thus not giving me the performance that I used to have.  I have tried all of the tricks and the fan still constantly spins.  I have the latest version of Windows 10 and I have updated everything that I am aware of.  I work in the IT industry therefore I class myself as an IT expert.  Currently, given my expert opinion, I am now pointing towards more of an Apple based solution.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Justin,

We appreciate your response. There are many factors that affect why the fan is constantly running. It can be due to the number of programs running which take up the Surface resources, or the device working to maintain each processes. It can also be a symptom of a hardware failure. Please be advised that the fan turns on at 48 degree Celsius (or 114 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperature icon will appear and the device will shutdown at 50 degree Celsius (or 122 degrees Fahrenheit).

To clarify, can you tell us if you were able to perform a clean boot as mentioned above? Was the behavior the same even when device is on a clean boot state? If yes, we suggest that you run a power/energy report. Here's how:

Step 1: On the Search bar/Cortana, type 'cmd' to search for the Command Prompt then press and hold or right-click and select 'Run as administrator'.
Step 2: On the Command Prompt, type ' powercfg /energy ' and wait for the result.
*In case there's no report generated, exit the Command Prompt and restart your Surface then repeat Steps 1 & 2.
Step 3: Once there's a report being generated, follow and open the file location of the said report. (It will appear as 'energy-report.html').
Step 4: Once you open the report, kindly send the screenshot with your reply and/or upload the file via OneDrive and share the link so we can check it on our end.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

Hi,

I have followed the instructions and I have rebooted my Surface after running a clean boot.  The fan is still running constantly and it is still very time consumingly slow!  I have run the energy report which has produced a lengthy HTML file.  To which address should I share it with?

You can paste a screenshot of the report in your next reply to this thread. In that way, we can analyze the report. Also, we recommend that you run a full scan, using Windows Defender.

Thank you.
